Georgia Park Elementary Music Program

Ms. Ashurst (Ms. A) teaches Music at Georgia Park where she provides instruction twice a week for 30 minutes. In addition, she leads a choir which is an option during school time, running September to December for Grade 4/5 students and January to April for Grade 2/3 students. The performance group rehearses Monday afternoons from 1:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m.

The music program's main goals are:

    • To learn specific melodic and rhythmic concepts through the use of songs, literacy and games with a focus on proper technique. This includes the use of instruments such as the voice, percussion, xylophones (primary) and recorder (intermediate). Ms. A achieves this by teaching with a focus on Kodaly and Orff methodologies of teaching music.
    • To learn about dynamics, tempo, form and timbre.
    • To provide opportunities to create, perform, listen to and respond to music.
    • To provide opportunities to study different musical styles and musical cultures.

Some performance opportunities planned for the year include choir for grades 4/5 (present-winter break), choir for grades 2/3 (winter break - spring break), the Remembrance Day Assembly (choir), performing for senior citizens at Berwick By the Sea (choir), Music Showcase (choir), the Spring Assembly and the Parent Tea.

An additional and complimentary part of Georgia Park's Music Program is a ukulele club that will be offered one lunch time per week starting after Thanksgiving. It will be led by Mrs. Sequeira. Rehearsal time tbd.
