At the February 27 public board meeting, the Board of Education passed a motion to make the draft calendars for the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 school years available for public feedback. The calendars were developed by Superintendent Longridge in consultation with the district's calendar committee.
The proposed calendars have school opening on the first Tuesday after Labour Day and one-week spring breaks. New to both calendars is the addition of five early-dismissal days to allow for teacher collaboration time to support the educational transformation.
Students will be dismissed 90 minutes earlier on these five early-dismissal teacher collaboration days and one of the Ministry of Education's allowed non-instructional days (of five hours) was eliminated to offset this time.
These early-dismissal teacher collaboration days will be monitored for how they impact student learning and student success. Teachers will be using this time to work collaboratively to look at the learning within the school and ways to enhance it.
The calendar committee is comprised of representatives from the Board of Education, Campbell River Principals' and Vice-Principals' Association, Campbell River District Teachers' Association, CUPE Local 723, the District Parent Advisory Council, senior management, the Core Pro-D coordinator, Aboriginal Education Advisory Council, and students from Carihi and Timberline secondary schools.
Feedback will be collected until 4 p.m. on March 15 as the final school calendars are required to be submitted to the Ministry of Education by March 31.
