EDM'S NEW DRUMS

This month, Karen Evans, our Indigenous Youth Care Worker, lead the students and teachers in a hands-on opportunity to create 30 drums for our school. We were also very lucky to have the help of Gillian Kirke (Indigenous Education Teacher), Sheila Smith, Alana Thompson (our youth care workers), Sarah Danielson (our Education Assistant), Erickia McNair and Jennifer Menard (two wonderful parents).

The following week, we blessed all the drums as a school community, honouring the spirit of every drum. An elder, Elvis Chickite, came to witness our blessing of the drums.

Each class will have the opportunity to care for the drums. We hope to use the drums at assemblies, special events and regularly within each classroom. Last week, the staff had the opportunity to spend some time learning and utilizing the drums with Karen Evans, Tami Johnson and Gillian Kirke, all who are part of the Indigenous Education Department in our district. It is an honour for EDM to be gifted the drums and the teachings that come with it. We look forward to learning a drumming song that was gifted by Will Hendersen to our district.
