Code of Conduct

PURPOSE:

The Campbell River School District Elementary Code of Conduct sets clear expectations for student behaviour. It aims to cultivate learning environments that are welcoming, safe and respectful for all. The Code of Conduct applies to all students attending school or school related events, while riding the school bus, taking part in school events or participating in situations that affect the school community.

Core Values & Beliefs:

The Code of Conduct is based on these four key values and beliefs:

  1. Respect: We will practice respect for oneself, for others, for our school and for the land.
  2. Safety: We will work to keep everyone safe, including their bodies, feelings and mental health.
  3. Responsibility: We will recognize our actions and how they affect others.
  4. Inclusivity: We will value differences and ensure everyone feels welcome and included.

CONDUCT EXPECTATIONS:

Acceptable Conduct

Students are expected to:

  1. Respect other students, the school community, personal belongings and the land.
  2. Contribute to a safe, caring and orderly environment that supports learning.
  3. Follow staff instructions in a respectful and cooperative manner.
  4. Report incidents of bullying, harassment or intimidation to a trusted adult.
  5. Actively participate in learning activities during instructional time.
  6. Keep cell phones and other personal electronic devices turned off and in their school bags. This is keeping with the district’s Operational Procedure 359 Personal Digital Devices.
  7. Act in a way that embodies the values of the Campbell River School District.

Unacceptable Conduct

Examples of unacceptable student conduct include, but are not limited to:

  1. Behaviours that disrupt the learning of others or create unsafe conditions.
  2. Bullying, harassment or intimidation in any form.
  3. Physical violence or aggression towards others.
  4. Retaliation against individuals who report incidents.
  5. Discrimination based on any of the grounds outlined in the BC Human Rights Code, including race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or age.
  6. Possession, use or distribution of illegal substances or weapons.
  7. Theft, vandalism or damage to property or the land.
  8. Inappropriate use of technology, including cyberbullying and unauthorized access to digital resources.

Rising Expectations

As students age, they are expected to take more responsibility for their actions, make good choices, and demonstrate maturity. Consequences for inappropriate behaviour will be applied in a fair and consistent manner, with a restorative focus on helping students learn from their mistakes, make things right and grow as individuals.

Consequences

If a student breaks the Code of Conduct, the response will depend on the seriousness of the behaviour, the frequency and the student’s individual needs. The goal of any consequence is to help the student understand their inappropriate behaviour, prevent it from happening again and repair relationships in the school community.

Notification

School staff will inform the parents or guardians of the student(s) involved, school district staff and if needed, the police. We are legally obligated to protect the privacy of all students involved and share only the information needed to keep everyone safe and supported.
