Fruit and Vegetable Program

Ocean Grove Elementary is participating in a government funded fresh fruit and vegetable program to promote healthy choices in schools.

Every two to three weeks, we receive a grown in BC food. The children learn a little about the product, where it grows in the province, where else in the world the same produce can be grown and then they are encouraged to try a sample.

School Community Garden

In the spring of 2019, a very determined, organized and committed group of parent and staff volunteers worked to establish the largest school community garden at an elementary school in Campbell River.  Our 275 students at Ocean Grove School benefit from this garden and outdoor educational space.

School gardens open a new opportunity for children to learn and connection with nature.  It has shown to promote positive minds and healthy bodies by learning about healthy foods and being physically active.  It allows children to learn valuable gardening and agricultural lessons, and skills that integrate school curriculum such as science, math, art and health.  Children also have the opportunity to develop social, teamwork and problem solving skills in a hands-on atmosphere.

Each Ocean Grove classroom participates by having its own garden plot and teachers decide with their students what items will be planted and grown for their classroom. Surplus items harvested are frozen and used by classrooms to make soup and baked goods.
