Absences

Student safety is very important in the Campbell River School District. To help schools with this shared responsibility, we ask parents to notify the school when your child is going to be away or arriving late to school.

Please call the school and report the absence through the attendance line (option 1) or email the school office AND your child's teacher BEFORE 8 AM.  Provide the following information:

  • student's first AND last name
  • your relationship to the student (ie Mom, Dad)
  • days the student will be absent
  • REASON for the absence (illness, appointment, vacation, or otherwise excused)

Attendance is recorded each morning and after lunch.  All unexcused absences will result in a phone call home to check if the child is coming to school or has been excused.  Please note that standard procedure is to phone the cell number of guardian one on the child's file.  To save us the time of making unnecessary phone calls each day, please communicate your child's absence in a timely manner.

Extended Absences

Regular school attendance is important for continuity of instruction, classroom participation and learning outcomes. However, we recognize that parents may choose to take their child out of school for holidays, sporting events and other activities throughout the year. Teachers might be able to provide some work for students who are absent for a short term, provided sufficient preparation time is available, but parents should not expect the school to provide in depth learning support in these instances.

If your child will be away for an extended period due to long term illness or hospitalization, the school will make alternative arrangements to continue to deliver educational programming. Please contact your child’s teacher as early as possible to inquire about materials for home study.

Leaving Early

If you are planning to sign out your child early, please email both your child's teacher AND oceangrove@sd72.bc.ca to advise of the early pick-up.  If at all possible, it is best to do this the day before to ensure that the teacher receives the message and that the class is not on a walking fieldtrip when you would like to pick up your child.  If your child is returning to the school after an appointment they must sign in at the office.
