Code of Conduct
The intent of Quadra Elementary's code of conduct is to establish guidelines for acceptable conduct to maintain a safe, caring, and orderly environment conducive for learning. All students are subject to the school's code of conduct while on school premises and during school activities off of school grounds.
Purpose
- To establish and maintain safe, caring, and orderly learning environments
- To establish and maintain an appropriate balance between individual and collective rights, freedoms and responsibilities
- To clarify and publish expectations for student behaviours while at school, while going to and from school and while attending any school function or activity at any location
Application
This code of conduct applies to all students attending Quadra Elementary School. The code of conduct is in effect during activities that are school related. This includes actions that occur off school property such as cyber-bullying, bus behaviours, or walking home.
Rights and Responsibilities
All students at Quadra Elementary have the right:
- To learn
- To hear and be heard
- To be respected
- To be safe
- To privacy
- To have respect for their personal space and belongings
All students at Quadra Elementary are expected to undertake the following responsibilities:
- To listen to instructions
- To work quietly when required
- To stay at their seat when required
- To raise their hand and wait to be called on before speaking
- To respect others and their belongings in all environments (outside, bus, classroom, washroom, hallways, etc.)
- To work and play in a safe manner
- To be in the (just right) learning zone
Conduct Expectations
Acceptable Conduct
At Quadra we:
- Respecting self, others, and the environment (outdoors and in)
- Helping to make the school a safe, caring, and orderly place
- Developing a sense of self-regulation
- Complying with staff directions in a reasonable manner
- Informing a “tellable” adult of incidents of bullying, harassment or intimidation
- Engaging in purposeful learning activities during instructional time
Unacceptable Conduct
These behaviours are examples only and are not an all-inclusive list.
Behaviours that:
- Interfere with the learning of others
- Interfere with orderly learning and/or play environments
- Create unsafe conditions to learn, work or play.
Acts of:
- Physical violence
- Teasing, harassment, bullying, cyber-bullying or intimidation
- Retribution against a person who has reported incidents
- Discrimination as set out in Section 7 (Discrimination Publication) and Section 8 (Discrimination in Accommodation, Service and Facility) of the BC Human Rights Code: race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or age of that person or class of persons
Rising Expectations
At Quadra we feel that as children become older and have learned and practiced our expectations for their behaviours they will demonstrate an increase in personal responsibility and self-discipline. Consequences for inappropriate behaviour will be determined on an individual basis according to circumstances, maturity and age.
Disciplinary actions, wherever possible, are preventative and restorative, rather than punitive. Opportunities to redirect or re-teach appropriate social expectations will be used as often as possible.
Notification
Our school personnel will advise other parties of serious breaches of the code of conduct:
For example:
- Parents of student offender(s) – in every instance
- Parents of student victim(s) – in every instance
- School district officials – in the judgement of the school principal
- Police and/or other agencies – as required by law
- All parents – when deemed to be important to reassure members of the school community that school officials are aware of a serious situation or incident and are taking appropriate action to address it
