About Us

Now entering our fourth year, Cortes Island Academy has welcomed students from across British Columbia, Alberta, and Internationally. Cortes Island Academy offers a one-of-a-kind, place-based high school experience. Here, education goes beyond the classroom—students earn credits while engaging deeply with their environment, guided by scientists, local knowledge holders, and thought leaders.

Marine Ecology

Each semester is designed around a central theme, and for Fall 2025/2026, we’re diving into Marine Ecology. Through art, science, and experiential education, students will explore ocean ecosystems, deep ecology, and citizen science, while working on real-world projects that make an impact.

Students will earn 24 high school credits in Science, Outdoor Education, Art, Social Studies, English, and Career Education, all contributing toward their diploma

As we reflect on the last three years of Cortes Island Academy, we are feeling immense gratitude for the brave students who have chosen to do things differently—to dive deeper into their education, ask big questions, and create real-world impact projects that extend far beyond the classroom.

Thank you to the incredible students, teachers, facilitators, and community members who have supported the birth of this program—one that fills the gap in rural education and provides access to students who otherwise wouldn’t have a school to attend. CIA is not just a school; it’s a movement toward experiential, place-based, and meaningful education for those who need more than just a traditional high school experience.
