About Us

Outside of Ecole Phoenix Middle School.

École Phoenix Middle School has a long and varied history. The school first opened its doors on April 28, 1950 as an elementary, junior, and secondary school and was built to handle 500 students. Before long, the population had grown to allow for a number of new elementary schools to be built and the school became a secondary school for students in grades 8 - 12.

In 1965 when Carihi was built, the school was transformed into Campbell River Junior Secondary serving grades 8, 9, and 10. Over the next decade, it developed many proud scholastic and athletic traditions.

Sadly, on the evening of August 25, 1976 the school building was destroyed by fire and for the next two and a half years students attended school on shift at Carihi Secondary while a new building was constructed. The school was officially reopened on January 19, 1979 and was later renamed "Phoenix" to symbolize its rebirth from the ashes.

In 1984, all four Campbell River secondary schools were reconfigured to offer grades 8 through 12. In its first year of change Phoenix offered grade 11, and in the following year (1986) saw its first graduating class. The school graduated two more classes (1987 & 1988) before being transformed into a "middle school" providing education for students in grades 7, 8, and 9.

Ten years later, in 1994, Phoenix became a dual track school offering both French Immersion and English instruction.

In September 2012, School District 72 changed the grade configuration of all district schools and today École Phoenix houses approximately 611 students in grades 6, 7 and 8.

A large First Nations student population contributes to an important third component to Phoenix's culture. Art created by First Nation students is permanently displayed on the walls of Phoenix. One of the most impressive symbols of our roots is the totem pole carved by local artist Bill Henderson. It can be found in the centre of our school, the inner courtyard.

The symbol of our school, the Phoenix Firebird, was painted on our gym floor by artist and teacher Shannen Harle. It majestically proclaims our Firebird spirit! We encourage all students to be active and involved so that they can discover the many skills and talents they possess. We hope that the Phoenix years are years of discovery and growth!
