BC Youth Week is coming up from May 1 to 7 and the City of Campbell River is hosting a full week of activities designed to help young people get active, learn something new, and connect with others in the community. There will be a kickoff party on May 1 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at the Sportsplex and through the week there will be a youth spin class, 3 on 3 basketball tournament, an opportunity to learn basic first aid, and creative events like pottery classes and cupcake design. Easter Seals BC/Yukon are inviting classrooms around BC to participate in National AccessAbility Week from May 31 to June 6, 2026 by submitting a design that will be produced on T-shirts. The theme is reimagining play, learning and community through accessibility. There are two grand prizes including a $200 honorarium for the winning student, $750 for the winning student’s classroom to purchase learning materials, T-shirts with the winning designs to be given to the winning students and their teachers, and finalists will receive a pizza lunch for their classroom. The submission deadline is midnight on Friday, May 1. The contest is open to students in grades 5 to 8 and 9 to 12. Small Planet Energy is running their 7th annual Small Planet Garbage Clean-Up contest from now until April 30 across the Campbell River and Comox Valley Regional Districts, with over $10,000 in cash and prizes to be won for clean-up efforts. This is a fun, hands-on way for students of all ages to celebrate Earth Month. Cleanups can be large or small – any student-involved entry typically receives a prize. Fourteen schools participated last year, including an inter-school challenge led by Phoenix Middle School’s leadership class. Free biodegradable/recycled garbage bags (donated by Pitch-In Canada) and free tipping fee waiver forms (donated by CVRD) are available from the contest organizer.
