As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we need to address some important changes regarding the use of cell phones and other personal digital devices such as tablets, smartwatches, earbuds, and other electronics in our schools.

For the safety and well-being of students and to create a more focused learning environment, the Ministry of Education requires all schools to restrict student use of cell phones and other personal digital devices while at school.

What This Means: New Digital Device Guidelines for September 2024

  • Elementary School: Cell phones and other personal digital devices will not be allowed. If brought to school, they must be kept in the students’ bag and can only be used with permission from the teacher or principal.
  • Middle School: Students can bring cell phones or other personal devices, but they can only use them with permission from the teacher or principal. Cell phone use at breaks and lunch times will not be permitted.
  • Secondary School: Students can bring cell phones and personal devices and use them during breaks, but not during class time unless given permission by the teacher or principal.

Schools will be providing more details in September about these restrictions and how they will look in your child’s school.

Accessibility or Medical Exceptions

We understand that some students have specific accessibility or medical needs that require the use of a cell phone or other personal digital device. If your child requires an accommodation, please contact the school to discuss their needs.

Communication During the School Day

If you need to contact your child during school hours, please call the school office.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in ensuring the best possible learning environment for our students. If you have any questions, please reach out to your school principal.
