Students Across the District Learning Bike Safety

Grade 4 and 5 students across the district are learning how to ride safely and confidently thanks to the Learn2Ride curriculum and training developed by HUB Cycling, and delivered by Sarah Wright of Play CR and Stephanie Stromquist, the district’s physical literacy teacher coordinator.
This hands-on program teaches students how to care for a bike, wear a helmet properly, follow road rules, and stay safe while riding in their neighbourhoods. With a mix of classroom learning and practice outside, students build both skills and confidence—especially those who are new to biking.
Thanks to a $16,000 Vision Zero grant earlier this year, the district now has a full class set of bikes and helmets, along with a custom trailer that moves the equipment between schools. This means all students can participate, even if they don’t have access to a bike or helmet of their own.
The trailer, outfitted by the district’s maintenance carpentry team, allows the program to travel to schools across the district. This year, students at Cedar, Georgia Park, Penfield, and Sayward took part.
Learn2Ride is offered to either grade 4 or grade 5 students, with schools alternating each year so that every student gets a chance to participate during their intermediate years.
The most recent grant continues to grow the district’s cycling safety program. The goal is to give students the knowledge and confidence to get around safely on their bikes—and to support healthy, active travel in our communities.
