SD72 2025 Governor General Award Recipients: Rebecca Sutherland (Carihi) and Alexander Langmayr (Timberline)

As the new school year approaches, the Campbell River School District is pleased to recognize the outstanding academic achievements of the top graduates from the Class of 2025. Each year, the district celebrates the recipients of the Governor General’s Academic Medal – an award that highlights the highest level of scholastic excellence among Canada’s students.

This year’s medals have been awarded to Rebecca Sutherland, a Carihi Secondary graduate, and Alexander Langmayr, a Timberline Secondary graduate. Both earned the top grade point average in their graduating class, based on their grade 11 and 12 coursework.

The Governor General’s Academic Medal, first established in 1873, is one of the most prestigious awards for academic accomplishment in Canada. The bronze medal is presented to the student who attains the highest overall average upon completing secondary school.

Rebecca will begin her studies this fall at the University of Victoria, pursuing a combined Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Psychology. With a passion for understanding how the brain works, she hopes to build a future in research.

Alexander will also attend the University of Victoria in September, where he plans to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a focus on Computer Hardware Engineering. He is eager to connect his studies with his interest in Formula 1 racing and envisions a future career in racing design.

“On behalf of their teachers and everyone in School District 72, we are extremely proud of Rebecca and Alex,” said Geoff Manning, superintendent of schools. “Achieving this level of academic success is no small feat. Their dedication, perseverance, and hard work will undoubtedly serve them well in whatever direction they choose to take.”
