Campbell River Students Have Skills!
Campbell River students are heading to nationals after standout performances at the Skills Canada BC Provincial Competition at the TRADEX in Abbotsford.
Four School District 72 teams competed in the provincial competition on April 15, with two teams earning gold medals and the opportunity to represent BC at the national competition in Toronto from May 26 to 30.
Timberline Secondary students Julian Ciumac and Dana Kim, both in Grade 11, captured gold in video production. The win builds on their silver medal finish at provincials in 2024 and marks a strong return to the competition.
Carihi Secondary students Jett Taylor, Grade 12, and Indy Cook, Grade 10, also took gold in 3D animation. Taylor had earned bronze at provincials last year, making this year’s result a step up on the podium.
Both teams will now represent British Columbia at the Skills Canada National Competition, where top students from across the country will compete.
Two other SD72 students also reached provincials. Timberline student Kevin Johnstone, Grade 12, competed in cabinetmaking in his second appearance at the provincial level. Carihi student Kayin Dennis, Grade 12, competed in baking in a third trip to provincials and plans to attend the Vancouver Island University Pastry Arts program this fall.
The provincial results build on a strong showing at the North Island regional competition in February, where SD72 students earned multiple medals to qualify for provincials.
Skills Canada competitions give students a chance to test their skills in real-world challenges across trades and technology. For these students, that work is now taking them to the national stage.
