Did You Know?

Hands on, curriculum connected program that takes place throughout the school year, giving teachers the resources and tools to help students learn about plastic pollution, the circular economy, and how they can create positive change in their communities. Students participate in classroom learning, local litter cleanups and data collection, helping them develop critical-thinking skills, become citizen scientists, and put their learning into action at school, at home, and in their communities.

AdventureSmart Outdoor Safety Presentations: Campbell River Search and Rescue is offering free AdventureSmart outdoor safety presentations for SD72 schools. Presentations are delivered by Search and Rescue volunteers and are available in English and French.

Topics include:

• Hug-a-Tree and Survive (ages 5-11) - preventing and responding to becoming lost outdoors
• Survive Outside - trip planning, outdoor preparedness, and emergency response
• Snow Safety & Education (Grades 4-6) - ski hill safety, signage, and out-of-bounds risks
• PaddleSmart - canoe, kayak, and paddleboard safety

Schools interested in arranging a presentation can learn more about the program through the AdventureSmart website or contact Campbell River Search and Rescue directly. 

Festive Chorus Opportunity for Students: Students who enjoy singing are invited to join a community choir performing with Festive Brass and guest artist Joëlle Rabu in A Cinematic Christmas. They are assembling a choir to perform two shows: December 17 in Campbell River and December 18 in Courtenay. There would be three rehearsals: November 8, November 29, and December 12 at the Big Yellow Hall in Merville, 1245 Fenwick Rd, from 10am to 12pm. No audition is required, music does not need to be memorized, and singers may participate in one or both performances. Forum for Young Canadians 2027 Applications Open: Students aged 15-18 are invited to apply for the 2027 Forum for Young Canadians, a national civic learning program held in Ottawa. Participants gain firsthand experience with Canada's democratic institutions, engage with elected officials and public servants, develop leadership skills, and connect with youth from across the country. Three program sessions will be offered between February and April 2027. Application deadline is October 25, 2026. Provincial Election Employment Opportunity for Students: Elections BC is recruiting high school students to work as election officials during the provincial election on Oct. 24, 2026. This paid opportunity gives students valuable work experience while supporting the democratic process. Interested students can learn more about available positions, pay rates, training requirements and how to apply through the Elections BC Youth at the Booth website.
