RiverCity Inclusion and the Ministry of Children and Family Development are inviting adults with FASD, family and friends of those with FASD to a presentation from Myles Himmelreich, a world renowned FASD expert, consultant, and motivational speaker on Friday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tidemark Theatre. Learn about FASD and the challenges associated with sensory integration, attention, language, cognition, memory, and stigma, while discovering strategies that can make a real difference for people who need support. North Island College NIC Fest is an annual education and career festival aims to showcase North Island College’s programs and services. To be held at NIC’s Campbell River campus on Tuesday, March 11 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. the event will include prizes, swag, food and information to explore opportunities on and off campus. Parents and caregivers are invited for an information session later in the evening from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the student commons. Those supporting high school students in planning their post-secondary education and training will learn about NIC programs, university transfer pathways, financial aid, awards, student housing and more. There will also be an opportunity to connect and ask questions with Indigenous Services. 
Educators are also invited to bring any interested grade 11 or 12 students and/or classes to participate in NIC Fest. Students will have time to explore the campus, connect with NIC staff and faculty, and meet NIC advisors in person. NIC Fest

Greenways Land Trust is once again inviting teachers and schools to participate in their environmental education programming. They offer nature-based outings and activities to enhance, restore, understand and appreciate nature. Environmental education opportunities include: planting native species, picking up litter in environmentally sensitive areas, interpretive outings to explore nature, identify who's who, and learn about ways to reduce our ecological footprint, removing invasive plants, stream monitoring, visiting the fish counting fence, watershed model interactive demonstration, birding, nature-based games, and painting yellow fish for the storm drain marking program. New this year through the Junior Streamkeepers EcoAction projects are Erickson and Denman pond planting and the construction of nest boxes for the Western Screech Owl. Greenways is looking for woodshop teachers who would like to build these houses and other classes who would be interested in assembling the nest boxes in collaboration with the woodshop classes. Information on the North Island Rent Bank from the Comox Valley Affordable Housing Society. The North Island Rent Bank is a service that provides financial assistance to qualifying community members who are struggling to pay their rent and are at risk of losing their housing. Information from the Government of Canada on the Canadian Dental Care Plan which aims to reduce the cost of dental care for Canadians who have a net family income of less than $90,000.  Complete details for the Canadian Dental Care Plan can be found online at Canada.ca/dental or by clicking HERE.

 The implementation has been following a phased-in approach. Applications are currently open for:

  • children under 18
  • persons with disabilities with a valid Disability Tax Credit on file with CRA
  • seniors 65+

 Note: The program will expand to all eligible Canadian residents as of 2025.

To qualify for the CDCP, you must:

  • have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000.
  • be a Canadian resident for tax purposes.
  • have filed your tax return for the previous year (and received Notice of Assessment).
  • not have access to dental insurance.
  • NOTE: You need to meet ALL the eligibility criteria to qualify for the CDCP.

Parenting Children with ADHD Support Group
Offered through parent Support Services Society. Open to anyone in BC online via Zoom. Every two weeks on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. Free, anonymous and confidential self-help group providing parents and caregivers with a safe space to share their stories, build communities, learn new skills, receive emotional support and discover new services and resources. Register here
