Cortes Island Academy Accepting Applications for Fall 2026 Semester
Students in School District 72 who are looking for a different high school experience are invited to apply to the Cortes Island Academy for the Fall 2026 semester.
Now entering its fourth year, the Cortes Island Academy offers a place-based learning program for students in Grades 10 to 12. The program brings together students from across British Columbia, and from outside the province, for a semester of hands-on learning on Cortes Island.
At the academy, the island becomes the classroom. Students work with teachers, scientists, artists and local knowledge-holders while earning high school credits through field studies, creative projects and community work.
The theme for the Fall 2026 semester is Underground Media. The program will explore the systems that exist beneath the surface, including ecological, cultural and political systems. Students will study topics such as soil, fungi, land, hidden histories and alternative forms of communication. Learning will include outdoor education, creative media, science and leadership studies.
Students can earn up to 24 graduation credits in courses such as Life Sciences, English, Social Studies, Media, Outdoor Education and Leadership while taking part in the program.
Cortes Island Academy is designed for students who are interested in experiential learning and who want to connect their education to the natural world and their community. The program is especially suited to students who enjoy outdoor learning, creative work and project-based studies.
Applications are now open for the Fall 2026-2027 semester.
