Lights, Camera, Zombies! Carihi and Sayward Students Make a Zombie Movie

General News, Curriculum & Learning
Safe Zone: A Zombie Film

Students from Carihi Secondary’s Video Productions class recently visited Sayward Elementary to make a zombie movie called Safe Zone: A Zombie Film. For two days, Sayward students turned their school into a movie set while Carihi students helped teach them about filmmaking.

Older students showed the younger ones how to plan scenes, act, do makeup, and film. The Sayward students brought lots of creativity and excitement to their roles as zombies. It was a fun way for everyone to learn new skills and work together.

"I'm so grateful for this opportunity to collaborate, “said Joe Shields, Carihi video teacher. “Everyone at Sayward Elementary was all in for Safe Zone, especially Sayward principal Kai Taylor and Sayward teacher Melissa Cada, who embraced us 'zombifying' her intermediate students for two days. Her zombies even stayed green through an earthquake drill!"

The Carihi crew also stayed overnight at the school, supported by Catherine Clinton and the Sayward Parent Advisory Council.

A special showing of Safe Zone: A Zombie Film will take place on Thursday, November 13 at 12:30 p.m. in the Timberline Theatre. The event will also be streamed live to Sayward Elementary so the students there can watch their movie together. Timberline teachers Jana McFarlane, Brennan Hagen, and Shannon Williams are helping host the event and set up the live stream.
