Phoenix & Sandowne Earth Day Efforts Pay Off in More Ways than One

École Phoenix Middle School and Sandowne Elementary placed second and fourth, respectively, in the Small Planet Energy Earth Day community clean-up competition.
École Phoenix leadership students launched a month long, school-wide challenge between 15 homerooms and cleaned a total of 874 pounds of garbage! Earning the school second place and $1,000 from Associated Tire and the Comox Valley Regional District, as well as $300 in Boston Pizza gift certificates.
Sandowne Elementary won $400 from IZCO Technology and $200 in gift certificates from Boston Pizza for their impressive collection of four large garbage bags worth of trash from around their school neighbourhood.
Phoenix students plan to dedicate their prize money to another green initiative to lessen the school's environmental footprint. Sandowne will likely use their prize money towards their school garden.
Five schools were involved in the fourth annual Small Planet cleanup contest this year! École Phoenix, Sandowne, Ocean Grove, École Willow Point and Pinecrest.
Ms. Mercer and Mrs. Gibson's Ocean Grove class, Mme. Rochefort's École Willow Point class, and Mrs. Pagliardi's class at Pinecrest also won $100 each.
