Students from School District 72 brought home national honours at the Skills Canada competition in Toronto May 26-30, with strong results in digital media events.

Timberline students Julian Cuimac and Dana Kim earned a bronze medal in video production, competing against top students from across the country. Jett Taylor and Indy Cook from Carihi Secondary placed fourth in 3D animation, just missing the podium in another highly competitive field.

The results highlight the growing strength of digital media and creative technology programs in the district. Students applied their skills in storytelling, design, and technical production in a high-pressure setting.

Teacher support and hands-on learning played a key role in their success, helping students prepare for the demands of national-level competition.

Dana Kim said the tight timeline pushed the team to think creatively and work under pressure.

"Having less than a day to plan, film, and edit a video was challenging, but it pushed us to think creatively and work well under pressure," she said. "It was stressful at times, but seeing everything come together in the end made all the hard work worth it."

Julian Cuimac said competing at the national level added a new level of intensity.

"When you're up against teams from across the country, it heightens the pressure," he said. "Video production is already a challenging, multi-skill art to race against time in."

The Skills Canada competition brings together students from across the country to showcase skills in trades and technology. For SD72 students, it also provides a pathway to future careers in creative industries.
