Grade 10 PE teachers receive updated CPR, AED and naloxone training
Grade 10 physical education teachers across the district received updated training in CPR, automated external defibrillator (AED) use, and naloxone on November 6. Led by the Campbell River Fire Department, the session provided teachers with instructor-level certification so they can teach these lifesaving skills to students. The certification is valid for three years.
This training supports new provincial requirements that will see all BC students learn CPR and AED skills as part of their physical and health education curriculum. As of September 2025, CPR and AED instruction became part of the grade 10 physical and health education curriculum. Training provided to physical and health education 10 teachers ensures they are prepared to deliver this updated content.
All students will now be required to learn CPR, AED use, and the purpose of naloxone before they graduate. While schools are not required to offer formal naloxone training, students will learn about opioid emergencies and how CPR and AEDs can help save lives. Naloxone kits must also be in all secondary schools by December 31, 2025.
The district is committed to keeping students safe, both inside and outside the classroom. Providing teachers with current training and ensuring students develop essential emergency response skills is part of a broader effort across BC to strengthen emergency preparedness in schools.
AEDs and naloxone kits will be in place in all School District 72 secondary schools by December 31, 2025, and in all district elementary and middle schools by September 8, 2026.
