Explore a wide range of media, including graphite, charcoal, chalk pastel, oil pastel, watercolour, acrylic paint, collage, printmaking and more. Create original images influenced by a variety of sources including observation, memory and imagination. Students will be encouraged to develop their personal style through both guided and self-directed projects.

Drawing and Painting 10 / 11 / 12

Formerly Studio Art 11/12 Drawing and Painting – SADP 11/12

Take your drawing and painting skills to the next level in this course. Explore a wide range of media, including graphite, charcoal, pastel, watercolour, acrylic and more. Graphic Arts 11 / 12

Formerly Studio Arts 11/12 Printmaking and Graphic Design – SAPG 11/12

Build your drawing skills and learn to apply the elements and principles of design to create powerful images and tell stories with your artwork. Develop your skills in illustration, printmaking and graphic design using a range of materials, processes and technologies. Students will be encouraged to explore their creativity in graphic arts through both guided and self-directed projects.

Advanced Art Portfolio 12

Are you excited about the artistic opportunities that await you after graduation – illustrator, graphic designer, painter, fashion designer, photographer, animator…? Your ticket into a post secondary visual arts program is your physical and digital portfolio. In this course you will be given assistance in raising your artistic skills, refining your personal style and putting together your body of work – your portfolio. Throughout this advanced course each of your pieces will be photographed, reflected upon and uploaded into your digital portfolio for college admissions, art exhibits, or personal use.

Ceramics and Sculpture 10 / 11 / 12

Create curious creatures, unique dishes, abstract sculpture and more in this hands-on 3D course. Master the basic techniques of hand-building with clay and then give the potter’s wheel a try. Learn how to apply glazes to make your projects look like finished works of art. Make functional ceramics for your kitchen, or let your imagination soar – if you can imagine it, you can create it in this class. Other 3D activities may include wire sculpture, found object sculpture, papier-mache, mobiles and origami. Students will be encouraged to explore their creativity and develop their personal style through both guided and self-directed projects.

Advanced Ceramics and Sculpture 12

Advanced Ceramics and Sculpture 12 is intended for students who wish to further explore the exciting world of 3-dimensional design! This course is specifically designed for independent learners interested in extending their work in ceramics and other forms of sculpture. There will be plenty of opportunity to concentrate your creative energy in very specific areas of your personal 3-D interests. Throughout this advanced course each of your pieces will need to be photographed, reflected upon and uploaded into your digital portfolio for college admissions, art exhibits, or personal use.

Beyond the Art Room:
Independent Directed Study in Art

Up to 4 Grade 11 or 12 credits

Do you have a passion for making art? Do you make a lot of art on your own time? Do you take art classes outside of school, or seek out online tutorials to inspire you and improve your skills? Would you like to get course credit for this, plus have an opportunity to work with a mentor to refine your skills, define your style, and figure out where to take your art next? Then this course is for you! This course runs outside of the timetable. Students will develop a plan with the supervising teacher, regularly submit work in progress for feedback, and report on hours of work completed. Students must also be enrolled in regularly scheduled courses in Art and/or the Hackerspace. Download the information sheet for details.
