Ripple Rock Students Sworn in as Mayors for a Day
On May 14, two students from Ripple Rock Elementary, Alaina and Benson, had the incredible opportunity to be Mayor for the Day! As part of Local Government Awareness Week (May 12-18), they stepped into the shoes of Campbell River's mayor and had a fantastic learning experience.
To be selected as Mayors for the Day, Alaina and Benson had shared their favourite thing about Campbell River, their suggestions for positive changes, and what they would do first if they were Mayor of Campbell River.
Alaina shared, "I feel safe enough to go for bike rides with just me and my older sister," while Benson highlighted "the skate park at the Sportsplex." Alaina also expressed her love for learning, saying, "I want to learn about the government and how everything works because I love to learn."
They kicked off their term by taking the official oath of office and spent the day touring various city facilities, including the Campbell River RCMP detachment and the Dogwood Operations Centre. They even had a lunch meeting with Councillor Susan Sinnott before wrapping up their day with a tour of City Hall.
Way to go Alaina and Benson for being engaged young citizens! And thank you to the City of Campbell River for offering students this opportunity to learn more about how the city delivers and maintains programs, services, and infrastructure for residents.
