École Phoenix Middle School gets $10,000 to encourage kids to walk/bike to class

École Phoenix Middle School is one of 12 schools in the province awarded a $10,000 grant as part of the Active School Travel pilot project, to increase the number of kids using active transportation to get to and from school.

Projects could include holding regular encouragement events and incentives to increase walking and biking to school; mapping the best routes; offering skill-building and safety education; reducing traffic volume around schools; shared bikes, scooters and skateboards; and bike racks and signage.

This grant supports the district’s school physical activity and physical literacy project, a multi-component school-based health promotion initiative in elementary and middle schools in partnership with Sport for Life, Pacific Sport and PLAY CR.

Physical literacy is about teaching students the confidence, competence and motivation that will encourage them to become active individuals that will engage with enjoyable activities throughout their life to stay healthy.

Active School Travel is administered by BC Healthy Communities Society, a province-wide not-for-profit group that facilitates the ongoing development of healthy, thriving, and resilient communities.
