Head Lice - What parents need to know

Why Regular Scalp Checks Matter

Head lice are tiny, wingless insects that live on the scalp and feed on blood. They lay eggs (nits) close to the scalp, which hatch in about 9–10 days. Because lice spread primarily through head-to-head contact, schools are a common place for transmission.

Regular scalp checks at home are one of the most effective ways to catch lice early and prevent them from spreading. The wet combing method is recommended:

  • Wash and condition your child’s hair.
  • Use a fine-toothed lice comb under bright light.
  • Check the entire scalp, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck.
  • Repeat checks weekly, especially if there has been exposure.

What to Do If You Find Lice

If you find live lice, treatment is necessary. Options include over-the-counter shampoos and non-chemical wet combing. It’s important to treat all affected family members and follow up with repeat checks to ensure the lice are gone.
