Bear Sighting in the Neighbourhood We have received reports of a bear sighting in the neighbourhood surrounding the school. At this time, the bear has not been observed near student groups or on school grounds, and there is no indication of an increased risk at school. Fall is a time when bears are naturally more active in our community. They may travel through residential areas looking for fruit trees and other food sources, or make their way to local rivers and streams to feed on salmon. Conservation Officers are aware of seasonal bear activity, this particular sighting and are monitoring. As part of our regular safety practices, teachers have reviewed bear awareness with students. We discussed the importance of: Walking to and from school with a friend, sibling, or group whenever possible. Talking as they walk so wildlife knows they are nearby. Staying aware of their surroundings. Giving wildlife plenty of space and never approaching a bear. Students were also reminded that if they encounter a bear: Stay calm. Do not run. Slowly back away while keeping the bear in sight. Speak in a calm voice. Move to a safe location and tell an adult as soon as possible. If a student sees a bear near the school, they should go directly into the school and notify an adult immediately. We will continue to monitor the situation and follow guidance from local authorities. Thank you for supporting these important safety conversations at home.
