SD72 Wrestlers Put in Strong Showing at Nationals

Student Achievement, Athletics
Torin, Alex and Fayth with Steve Rose at the 2023 Canadian Wrestling Nationals.

Congratulations to Campbell River Wrestling Association’s Torin Brooks (grade 9, Carihi), Fayth Pontious, and Alex Jackson (grade 9 and 10, Timberline) for their excellent results at the 2023 Canadian Wrestling Nationals from March 24-26. The trio of CR wrestlers qualified for nationals based on their BC high school results at provincials and throughout the school wrestling season.

All three wrestled U17 freestyle and Greco-Roman, over two days of intense competition. Fayth, wrestling in the 73 kg women’s division, came home with silver in freestyle (2 wins - 2 losses) and bronze (0-2) in Greco. Both Alex (60 kg, 3-2, 1 bye) and Torin (65 kg, 3-2, 1 bye) took 7th in freestyle, fighting through brackets of over 20 competitors. Alex came 4th in Greco (2-2), while Torin went 1-1, before withdrawing from competition due to injury.

These kids not only fought well and won, but also showed their strength in defeat, learning from their mistakes and facing their next matches with courage and determination.

Parents and athletes would like to send heartfelt thanks to the coaches and volunteers that have spent countless hours working with the entire CR team, specifically Steve Rose, Jason Kerluck, Sadie Dowler, Mike Munsie, Paul Murphy, and Scott Assu.
