Back to School Safety

General News, Health & Safety, Transportation
Students walking on a sidewalk on their way to school.

As the school bells ring once again, it’s important that we’re all mindful of school zones, crosswalks, and school bus safety to ensure that students get to and from school safely.

School Zones: Be sure to slow down and stay alert. Remember to obey the speed limit, slowing down to 30 km/hour in school zones between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for children crossing the streets, as they can easily be distracted.

Crosswalks: When driving, stop and yield to pedestrians at crosswalks. If you’re walking with your children, be sure to teach them the importance of using crosswalks properly by looking left, right, and left again before crossing. The best is for them to make eye contact with the driver before crossing.

School Bus Safety: Take care when approaching a school bus. Traffic in both directions must stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing. Stop at a distance that allows children to get on or of the bus and cross the road safely. Don’t move forward until the lights have stopped flashing and the bus begins to move.

Drop-off and Pick-up: Schools tend to be bustling with activity at the start and end of the day. Know your school’s drop-off and pick-up procedures to keep the traffic flow moving smoothly and ensure everyone’s safety. Don’t double park and make us of designated drop-off zones. Please be patient and cautious.

If we each do our part, we can make this school year the safest one yet!
