Summer is Here!

General News, Health & Safety

It’s a time for fun, adventure, and taking a well-deserved break—but it’s also important to stay safe and healthy along the way. Whether your family is heading out on a road trip, exploring local parks, or just relaxing at home, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Start with sun safety.

Make sure everyone applies sunscreen before going outside and remembers to reapply it during the day. Hats and UV-protective sunglasses are great ways to protect against strong sun. And during the hottest hours—between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.—try to stay in the shade when possible.

Keep cool and stay hydrated.

Water is key, especially when spending time outdoors. Encourage kids to drink water often and watch for signs of heat exhaustion like dizziness, nausea, or fatigue. Wearing lightweight clothing can also help them stay cool.

Play it safe around water.

If your summer plans include lakes, rivers, or pools, always keep a close eye on children. Life jackets should be worn when boating or paddleboarding, and older students should know not to swim alone or in places without supervision.

Stay smart on wheels and roads.

Helmets are a must for biking, skateboarding, or rollerblading. It’s also important to teach safe street-crossing habits and be extra careful around parking lots and driveways. Bright clothing and reflective gear help kids stay visible.

Be prepared for the outdoors.

When heading into nature, insect repellent can help prevent bites, and it's smart to check for ticks after hikes. Encourage regular handwashing before meals and avoid sharing water bottles. And always remind kids to be cautious around wildlife or unfamiliar animals.

Find balance with screen time.

While it’s handy to have a charged device for emergencies, it’s also important to unplug now and then. Try to balance screen time with outdoor play, exercise, and face-to-face fun.

We hope all our students enjoy a safe, healthy, and restful break. Take care of yourselves and one another—we can’t wait to welcome you back in September!
