Numeracy - Games
Math games, when integrated intentionally, are powerful pedagogical tools that move students from rote memorization to deep conceptual understanding.
Note: Blue headings are links
For the Student: Familiarity Leads to Mastery
- Lowers the Stakes: A wrong move in a game is a temporary setback, not a permanent red mark. This psychological safety encourages students to take risks and to keep trying.
- Builds Fluency Without Boredom: Games disguise the repetition needed for computational fluency. A card game is more actively engaging than a traditional worksheet.
- Develops Strategic Thinking: Games shift the cognitive demand from “What is the answer?” to “What is the best move?”. Students analyze probability and predict outcomes.
For the Teacher: The Stealth Assessment Tool
- Authentic Formative Assessment: Games let teachers observe student thinking in real time and intervene as needed.
- Natural Differentiation: Many games are adaptable, ie. “low threshold, high ceiling”. The basic structure can be easily modified for different ability levels without singling students out.
- Builds Collaboration and communication skills: Games require students to articulate their reasoning and negotiate rules, building a collaborative mathematical community.
- Proficiency is made visible. During gameplay, teachers can assess student understanding and readiness for new challenges.
Games for Numeracy Skill Building (All Ages): This one-page document includes a list of commonly used games that teachers in SD72 use to support numeracy development in their classes. The checklist also shows which skills are being developed or reinforced when students play that game.
